that shit looks beautiful!
interesting about the nail polish; refreshing to hear MAC's highly professional and appropriate reaction to criticism. i love that there are no excuses or explanations, just action!
Beautiful, however, that model is a bad choice for marketing this campaign. Can't think of anyone that could want to look like her other than Marilyn Manson.
i will not be buying any items of this collection because of the lack of sensitivity MAC have shown about the situation in Ciudad Juarez. Kudos to them for giving all the proceed from this collection to local organizations but the damage is done ! Did they really think it was ok to name products , Ghost Town
Sleepless ,Bordertown,Sleepwalker and no one would notice? just because the situation in Ciudad Juarez is not "mediatized" enough doesnt mean that people aren't aware of it! what's next MAC the Auschwitz collection?
I think anyone who even says this collection is insenstive is just looking for something to complaign about aka an instigator. Where in this collection does it say "dead raped body in the desert" lipgloss or "a bleeding drifting soul in the streets" mineralized blush? seriously, get a life.
I'm pretty sure most people who even complaign about it weren't even aware about Juarez's problem until this collection come out.
Seriously? Anyone who has to go to a makeup counter to hear about Juarez has problems. This has been widely reported on since 1993.
Exploiting a horrendously violent city for the "inspiration" to make $4,000 dresses is vile and disgusting.
Anyone who does not see the incredible exploitation in this collection or the aforementioned clothing collection is the insensitive one.
what do the names "Ghost Town
Sleepless ,Bordertown,Sleepwalker" have to do with anything? why would mac name their polish after that, just to be edgy? sorry, i don't think thats the case
If it werent for Rodarte sisters, nobody would ever even hear about Juarez, so people should stop with all the harsh criticism. This is the MOST that that town was ever talked about, so thank you sisters for shedding light. I will be buying most of this stuff, and im happy that the proceeds will go to the victims. God bless.
This issue has been widely reported since 1993 when the dead bodies of dozens of women were found together in Juarez.
Nobody would be talking about Juarez if not for Rodarte?? Are you KIDDING?? Maybe just people that don't read the news and rely on a make up counter for their current events memos wouldn't be talking about it. But the rest of the world has been and will be for years to come.
you, dear, are the epitome of ignorance. just because YOU are too caught up in your own little fantasy world where nothing bad happens doesnt mean that other people (like the entire country of mexico) dont know what is going on and has been going on for years now in Juarez. so please, speak for yourself.
MAC only took action of donating $100,000 after it received criticism. I do not think that it is something to praise. They were not looking to teach anyone anything. It is like catching someone doing something bad, and they only do 'good' to turn their name around. $100,000? For such a powerful corporation capable of helping out more, wouldn't it be nice if they showed continued support, not just a 'hey we messed up, here's some cash to make it look better for us".
Everyone has a right to voice their opinion. Specially if they are standing up to ignorance, exploitation, any wrongs. This collection is completely disgusting, exploitative and inappropriate. The violence that they are exploiting are people's realities. It is making profit out of rape and murder. If people say the names do not have any relation with anything, you are seriously naive.
Couldn't agree more!
There are 2 sides to this. First, well, it’s all good and well that Rodarte and MAC have decided to change the collection and donate money. However, the other side is that this is burning proof that blatant ignorance still exists in the United States. It is clear that there was not enough (if any) research involved. It honestly makes me think that the MAC/Rodarte researcher merely googled Mexico and, oh blast! Well Juarez pops up, then that must be good.
Juarez’s situation is known worldwide; just because the US only chooses to talk about Latinos and other minorities as least (and usually, as negatively) as possible doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Documentaries, books, films, and extensive articles have been written on this. If the Rodarte sisters wanted to honor their heritage, why didn’t they research their own family tree and honor that?
But MAC isn’t the only company guilty of utter stupidity. OPI and many many fashion designers are guilty of stereotyping cultures in order to make them fashionable. Of course, the “reappropriation” excuse is used to flatter their artistic temperaments, but really, they are doing just the same.
I love fashion, but I will not support the growing idiocy in it. Stereotypes still exist, but we have to fight them with knowledge and resistance.
I live in both the city of Ciudad Juarez and El Paso, Texas and although MAC did something terrible by naming this collection after our city the people here do not even know. We are more occupied on the hundreds of daily deaths. Woman are not just the only victims of this, now everyone can die. So MAC might have done this "generous" act, but trust me when I say that no one cares. We care when the day comes in which we can leave our home without wondering if we will return safely to our loved ones. And what JJovana said that this city isn't getting enough coverage, google it and you would be surprised.
Agrees with Alexa.
ATTENTION: if you are still wondering what the big deal is because you dont know what is going on in Juarez, think about it like this: lets pretend some very popular make-up brand in a foreign country decides to come up with a line of products inspired by…..the events of 9/11! and these are their products:
lipstick: "blazing concrete", "collapse"
lipglass: "hijacked", "ground zero"
eyeshadow: "flight 93", "al-qaeda"
nail lacquer: "wtc 1", "wtc 2"
now, are you thinking to yourself, "omg did she really just write that?" if you are, then maybe you understand what this collection means to the people who have suffered because of what is happening in Juarez.
I'm glad is been pulled.
incredible post. thank you.
