Dumpling House - 04.24.2008

img_7101.jpg
Dumpling House
118 Eldridge Street
New York, NY 10002-4418
212.625.8008

The Scene
The newly renovated Dumpling House is a few times bigger than their old space where there was only a narrow space for customers to order their dumplings. They took over the location next door and expanded their store, now there’s room for eat-in.

Dumpling House is one of my favorite spots for dumplings, they are all handmade and made on the spot. There is always a long line for these yummy dumplings but now that they’ve expanded the wait is minimal and you can eat-in too. Besides the store, their menu has expanded to include noodles and other stuff (can’t recall on top of my head) but I suggest to stick to the dumplings. Dumplings made their name and that’s what they’re good at, the noodles I ordered weren’t all that. Definitely one of the best spots for dumplings, cheap and good!

Coffee Shop - 04.15.2008

img_6971.jpg
Coffee Shop
29 Union Sq W Ste 1
New York, NY 10003
212.243.7969

The Scene
This place is past its prime but still trying hard to remain a scene, with striking retro decor, blaring music, dim lighting–and a waitstaff made up of out-of-work models whose snootiness and famously bad service is both humorous and irritating. The crowd is a mix of late-night NYU students, hungover brunchers looking to be seen, and various Union Square passers-by.

The Food
The most dependable route is to stick to appetizers–the cheese bread is quite good–and drinks. The bar does yeomanly work with cocktails, strangely excepting the acrid house caipirinha. Most of the dishes here are unmemorable, alternating between Brazilian dishes, like the thick, fishy moqueca stew of head-on shrimp, toughish scallops, and clams, and crowd-pleasers like char-grilled hamburgers and veggie burgers. The “gaucho” steak is large, lunkish, and likeable, though hardly prime; Brazilian churrasquino–grilled beef sandwich–is bready and tastes mostly of onion. - Citysearch

I always pass by the Coffee Shop when I’m around Union Square and it always seems to be busy. A few weeks back after I dropped off Cookie to get groomed, my mom and I walked up to Union Square to let Puffy exercise a bit. After awhile we got hungry and very little places allow dogs at the restaurant unless its outdoors so we opted for Coffee Shop. The waitress seemed nice, after seating us outside she brought over a bowl of water for Puffy too. We were both starving and it took the waitress awhile to bring us water and take our order, they were just not too efficient. The food was ok only and the prices weren’t super cheap neither - my bill came out to over $40. When it came time to pay, it took them awhile to give us the bill - we had to ask twice before getting it. I personally would not go back next time, my mom agrees. Did you have a better experience?

Kittichai - 04.07.2008

img_6894.jpg
Kittichai
60 Thompson Street
New York, NY 10012
212.219.2000
www.kittichairestaurant.com

The Scene
Orchids abound. They’re submerged in cylindrical glass vases in the small bar area; in the dining room, they climb up teak posts surrounding a bottom-lit pool. Jewel-toned raw-silk curtains and teak lattice, used to break up the boxy space, add further intrigue. Service in the dining room is well-tuned and well-versed in the nuances of the menu.

The Food
Chef Ian Chalermkittichai brings New York what it has long been missing: truly excellent Thai food. Flavors are sharp, bright and clearly defined; the chef’s skill is particularly obvious in familiar dishes like Thai beef salad, which rings of lime and hot chili on the palate, and a perfectly calibrated, addictive green curry bearing incredibly tender short ribs. The sea bass, marinated in a sweet-salty bean paste, is Chalermkittichai’s answer to Nobu’s black cod, and it’s equally stellar. The kaffir lime tart is a fitting denouement. - Citysearch

On the first day of my return from Hong Kong on April 7th which is my mom’s birthday, we went to Kittichai to celebrate. I was kinda skeptical going there since some of my friend’s weren’t a big fan of this spot but my bro seems to like it so I gave it a try. The atmosphere was great, very pretty especially the pool in the center with floating lit candles and water lilies. It was a comfortable dining area and even the bathroom was interesting, the restaurant in general is very mysterious and intriguing. Overall the food was decent, we ordered a lot of appetizers and entrees to share. I felt that the dessert definitely has room to grow, didn’t really like it. We ordered a lot of dishes and the menu seemed to have changed so I’ll try my best to remember what we ate…

March 28, 2008 - Hong Kong, Waiting for the bus…

This may be the shortest post of my travel entries haha, didn’t snap up that many pics that day. After lunch with B, we headed to visit my friend Tricia at her dad’s place. She prepared some barbecue for dinner and we all just chilled and watched Jay Chou’s concert haha. It is fun times just hanging out and chit chatting with people you like, ain’t need to be out and about all the time to have fun.

Hong Kong Trip Day #24 - 03.27.2008

img_5942.jpg
March 27, 2008 - Hong Kong, 8Five2 Shop @ Causeway Bay (dead beat by the time I got there, the humidity has got to me!)

Met up with the boys (YM, Masa and Shawn) to do a bit of visitation of the big guns in Hong Kong, Chris & Linton @ GarageWorks and Brian @ 8Five2 Shop. The GarageWorks office at Chai Wan is pretty dope, once you enter there’s racks and racks of toys - dope toys! After the tour of the toy house, we headed back to Causeway Bay to hit up Brian’s shop - Brian is one of the funniest people I’ve met in HK. “Sea Urchin…UGHHHH!” inside joke hahah, omg he is mad funny and he must be watching too much of The Wire haha. 8Five2 Shop is a dope spot, check out the store. Then we the four of us headed down to Mongkok to look for some DVDs, afterwards headed over to Langham place to find a spot to eat dinner. Since Ajisen Ramen has been haunting me (I see that restaurant everywhere), I’ve made the decision for everyone to eat there. The ramen was pretty good, then off to home - I was mad beat that day b/c it was super humid!!!

Hong Kong Trip Day #23 - 03.26.2008

img_5862.jpg
March 26, 2008 - Hong Kong, Jardin House

A few days ago, went to Central to run a few errands for my parents then met up with B’s friend Masa to shop around Causeway Bay. I pretty much know my way around Hong Kong, with a few exceptions of some local shopping places. After shopping around and copping 3 pairs of shoes (yes again, didn’t get a chance to snap pictures yet) we met up with Masa’s gf, Edith, my new friend :) - we all was feeling for some Korean BBQ so Edith brought us to Sorabol Korean Restaurant @ Lee Theatre Plaza. The food was really good, after dinner we went to have dessert at Lucky Dessert - that basically concluded my day.
