Luxury Brands to Cut Prices in the US!

Chanel Fall 2008 RTW / Christian Louboutin Boots

The WSJ has put up an interesting story today, “luxury-goods makers are cutting prices on designer apparel, shoes and handbags in the US market. The cuts range from 8% to 10% on most products sold in the US.” Never have I thought that Chanel, Versace, Christian Louboutin and Chloé would slash their prices because all I hear is prices are increasing at least once a year despite of how poorly our economy is. This is great news, any little bit counts when bags are souring to $3000 a piece and shoes are over $800 a pair.

The move to cut prices began with Chanel last month. The French fashion house, known for tweed suits that can cost $8,000, decided to trim its prices by 7% to 10% on most items that are hitting U.S. stores now. “The dollar’s recent strength has allowed us to pass on greater value to our customers,” says John Galantic, the company’s U.S. president.

Barbie Enters The Fashion World At Age 50

barbie2.jpg

At age 50, Barbie is to be marketed as a fashion brand next year. According to WWD, “Mattel is lining up new partnerships with Bloomingdale’s, Vera Wang, Jeremy Scott, IMG and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The company plans a runway show in February, as part of fashion week in New York, with 50 as-yet-undisclosed designers who will produce life-size outfits inspired by Barbie. A new line of beauty products — bearing cheeky names such as “All Doll’d Up” for color cosmetics and “Plastic Smooth” for skin treatments — is set for 2009.” Projects in the works include “a life-size wedding gown designed by Vera Wang, priced at more than $15,000, which includes a Barbie wearing a miniature version of the dress. Jeremy Scott will unveil a capsule collection inspired by Barbie for next spring. Mattel plans to launch a Barbie-themed shop-in-shop at Apothia in the Fred Segal retail complex in Santa Monica, Calif. Mattel will kick off a three-year partnership with the CFDA in February, when it also will begin sponsoring the IMG-organized Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York. As the first toy company partnering with the CFDA, Mattel is considering helping fund scholarships and organize panels. In turn, CFDA is helping Mattel find designers from the association’s 350 members who will participate in the runway show. During fashion week, which will be held at the same time as the American International Toy Fair, Mattel will feature Barbie in the windows and on the sales floor at Bloomingdale’s flagship.”

Wow, I can’t wait to see everything- I grew up with Barbie dolls so I’m anticipating this line up!

COMME des GARÇONS for H&M - NYC Release

l1070738.jpg

Finally November 13th hits and the COMME des GARÇONS for H&M is released! For the first time of all H&M collaborations I decided to wait in line for the COMME des GARÇONS collection. It is by far my favorite collaboration aside from the Stella McCartney (but didn’t line up for that). I got there to the NYC flagship store at 51st St/5th Ave at around 7:30am (doors open at 9am) this morning and met up with my friends that have already been waiting in line for about an hour- the first people in line got there the night before at 10pm (wow!). The line wasn’t as bad as I expected, definitely no where near dedicated as the Japanese. Being a newbie at this, I was a bit nervous since the H&M staff announced that there were only 4 (or 5- I forget) of the showpiece dress/jacket $349- that was my favorite piece in the collection…I could forget about it since I was around the corner already. The door opened at exact 9am and everyone gushed in, I was a bit distracted and confused but soon got into the gist of it and started piling up. Got some stuff I wanted and picked up a few things for B and my bro, lots of polka dots flying everywhere- but bags, wallets, sneakers and scarves were the first to go. It was definitely a weird experience, my arms are killing me now! When I left around 10am, there were still tons of polka dot cardigans and shirts around, not sure about now but I got a few pieces that were on my list…stay tuned for pics!

If you weren’t able to cop anything or pieces you wanted, there’s always the good old eBay. I think I may need to keep an eye out for a few pieces myself! There’s a ton of listings already. UGH! If you went, tell us your story, what did you get?

Who would guess socialite Kim Kardashian was rockin’ H&M? She wrote on her blog, “When I went out the other night for Brittny’s birthday, I loved my outfit! It was all from H&M! One of my favorite stores! The black lace top and the black bubble skirt were each under $50!” Of course she worked the outfit with a fierce Christian Louboutin pumps! HOT! I have that black lace top too! Thanks to reader Sintia for the tip!
