The Most Important Accessory: Your HAIR!

DAMN just had a chance to sit down and chill for a min, super busy at work…hence the lack of posts! Gotta meet the deadlines…anyways, just wanted to know how much you guys spend on your hair cuts, dying your hair, etc.? A few years back I thought getting a haircut for $25 was expensive already (once again being cheap on my hair), but my brother made me realize that my hair is the MOST IMPORTANT accessory you wear everyday. If your hair don’t look good, generally you look like a mess! That’s so TRUE (think Britney Spears), I never thought of it that way, he taught me well haha…so nowadays my friend that is a hairstylist cuts and dyes my hair for half price, so I pay about $100 each time I go there.

How much are you willing to pay to beautify your hair? Do you agree with me that its one of the most important accessories you have to wear everyday? For the sistas in NYC, where do you get your hair cuts and how much?

i also think that hair isnt something that should be monkeyd with. i have only one trusted stylist that cut and colours my hair.
i would never use haircolour out of a box.

My hair is the one thing that I can justify splurging on (although I splurge on other things, unjustifiably hah). I go to Cappriccio on 86th St. in BK. I usually pay like $200-ish for cut & highlights.

I like Rihanna’s new hairdo, very edgy. I don’t like to spend too much on my hair. I mean I end up tight it up the next day that i have my hair cut anyways. I usually just have my stylist to cut my bangs, and trim the end. I haven’t changed the style for about 2 years. my stylist used to work in a high end salon, and then she opens her own place in suburb, she’s pretty good at coloring(makes highlights even) and styling, but the place is a barber shop for guys….so I go with my bf (he needs haircut more often, I only do it quarterly). I was one of her first female customers…..But she always suggest me to do it myself, because she’s getting old and don’t wanna do coloring and highlightings, it usually takes her half day(same reason that she quited her salon job). so i get my friend to do the coloring, and get highlights from the stylist.
I agree with you and your bro, but it’s too money and time consuming to keep up.

I get my haircut by this Korean guy on 32nd street. The salon is pretty nice and he’s the owner there and gives the BEST haircuts. If i bring in a picture, he’ll cut it EXACTLY like that. One would think that it would be expensive, bc its NYC and he’s the owner….but its only $40 for a cut. Ive never been disappointed when he cuts my hair.

I have really long hair and HATE spending a ton of money on trims, so I tend to cheap out when I only need an inch or two taken off and spend $100 once a year getting a real cut and getting layers/shaping.

ps: annie–would love name and phone number of your guy, please!

I’m multiracial, so I have pretty crazy hair–curly, frizzy, very thick, the whole deal. I have spent thousands on my hair in the past (cuts, treatments, even the Japanese straightening process), but I have found that the best salon in NYC for multiracial people like me is the Brazilian salon Maria Bonita on Prince and Elizabeth. They are excellent in blowing hair out, have wonderful treatments, and give excellent cuts. I have recieved services from almost all of the stylists working there and they always do a good job, and I haven’t spent more than $150 there yet (usally I get blown out and cut w/a treatment for about $125-ish). Anyone else know of any salons for multiracial/ethnically mixed hair in NYC though?

i never spend more than $60 on my hair. i go to k.e. haas on clinton st. the two women who run it are really, really cool and friendly and have a cute bulldog, and i’m always the only one there. plus they give me free touch-ups for my bangs whenever i cut them myself and screw them up.

I live an hour outside the city and pay $40 + $10 tip = $50.
I go to one of the more expensive salons in my area, but it’s totally worth it. The stylists are all very hip and have amazing hair themselves. I agree, it’s uber-important to have good hair!

  14. jenny says:

Also – I spend about $60 a month on shampoo/conditioner/product – it makes such a huge difference! (I use Aveda and TIGI)

  15. edi says:

my stylist moved on me so im stuck with shitty hair until i get a new one. but he did my hair for really cheap just because he said i was” his muse” i pretty much let him do whatever he wanted with it. it was usually 80 for color. 25 for a wash and blow out.

  16. undergirl says:

if i absolutely have to get my haircut in america, i go to hayato in chelsea. from what i remember it’s $85 plus tips. otherwise, i try to hold off till i get to see my trusty hair stylist in hong kong.

  17. Elle says:

I cut my own hair! Lol. I just got bangs last year. Went to a stylists to do it. But the last time I cut my hair this year was prolly in January. I’ve been trimming my own fringe ever since.

  18. Lola Baby says:

everytime i get my hair done…whether its a cut/trim, str8, curled, braided……its always at least $75..and i get my hair done twice a month…so you do the math. lol

  19. margotmurder says:

I go to Mudhoney hair salon(s) they have a few locations. I spend about $80 plus tip.. but they do a fabulous job.. mohawks, trendy and hate to say it “scene” hairdos.. ask for Paul if you go to the location on Bond T-TR

  20. Dutch Lab says:

    Just throwing this out there…
Women that cut off real hair to later replace with a wig/extension is ass backwards to me…
