Maison Martin Margiela vs. David Penfound Horse Tee

According to the LAT, the already sold out $1395 horse-printed t-shirt from the Maison Martin Margiela spring ’08 collection has been found to be nearly identical to artist David Penfound’s “Summoning the Storm” image that he painted back in 1998 which is approved for reproducing at The Mountain for $19.95. Although the images are not completely identical, “there are some differences in Margiela’s design (instead of an Indian chief in full-feathered headdress looking toward the heavens, summoning the storm, the Margiela tee has a cluster of rocks covering in the foreground). But just compare the drama, details and style — and draw your own conclusions”. Not surprising as this happens in fashion on a regular basis. Thanks to reader Jazzy for the tip!

Thanks for pointing this out. High-end is always crying about getting bitten by lower-end vendors but high-end is STEADY biting from low-end, DIY/thrift, and streetwear.

Things like this make me angry >.>
The original artist who is selling it for cheaper is getting second treatment for his art while a high name fashion house is selling it at a higher price and getting recognition for an unoriginal print.

Total rip off. Look at those horses, and the river, AND the mountains. They’re all exactly the same. Just because you photoshop part of an image out does not mean that it’s a new piece of art. This is copyright infringement and Penfound should sue for damages.
