I’m from Mass where the headquarters are and have been shopping @ tjmaxx since probably the dawn of my time [haha] I love them so much, because they get stuff for so cheap before anyone else does. I remember when seven jeans just came out, the first month of the craze, they had them in store for 29.99 because they had no idea what they were.
I don’t want to know how much money I’ve spent over the years, but I do want to know how much I’ve saved. I miss my shopping days and will hopefully be able to go back more in 09. The NY one is kind of crap/overpriced.
I have shopped both stores for years. Stores in my area (dallas, tx) seem void of the designer brands you snagged in Boston. Although not every store is the same in terms of merchandising. They seem to focus on the shoe megashops these days. I must admit, the purse department sometimes has some real finds. Look and feel of the stores is hit or miss depending on the part of town. For example, some stores are dirty with merchandise on the floors and lots of damaged goods. I have been in shoe departments that have shoes all over the place. So it’s a real struggle to find your size or the mates of a shoe. Also, the beauty department can have some real luxe items but usually they have been opened by customers and tested, which is gross. Overall, I go in now to look at shoes or handbags and accessories like belts.
Marshalls and TJ-Maxx are def good discount stores with good quality products but like you, i hate searching the racks, i like to see what i want and just get it. I think the jacket would b cute without the faux fur piece, but anyways good to see you learned something new.
@MsPiscesJ: haha we clearly have different taste, the main reason i got the walter jacket was b/c of the faux fur piece so funny!!
I have been shopping at TJMaxx and Marshalls for years!
Some people are worried about it only having “past season” merchandise but i guess to each its own. I have found so many great designers and such great prices: Free People, Betsey Johnson, Michael Kors, Coach, Antik, and Ed Hardy, just to name a few.
I would only say that sometimes it might depend on WHICH area the store is to find better merchandise. They are definitly my go-to stores and there havent been many times that i go and end up not finding anything.
i think TJ’s/marshalls is a very good place to buy discounted perfume.
Personally, I have to be in the mood to treasure hunt. Sometimes the selection is overwhelming. However, digging through all those racks (if i have the time one afternoon) and finding a dress that fits just right, and i know i’ve seen at Nordstroms– i feel like a effing champ. Hahahaa… the store situatuation almost heightens the thrill and the reward, you know?
I loved reading this article– and to see the TJMaxx/Marshall’s business view– I had no idea how consumer focused they were– i always thought they just bought dumped items. Sad, right?
And, this may be a inaccurate because its my own personal experience– but i find better handbags at Marshall’s than i do at TJMaxx. However, the handbags i find are of good construction and leather goods– but not always a name brand thats well recognized by the masses… Shoes are… eh, in both stores– only because my shoe size is on the bigger side.
And finally, I’ve actually bought 2 down-alternative comforters at Marshall’s (do they own HomeGoods stores?) for a measly $50! They’re both nicer than ones i received as wedding gifts from my registry. There home goods are definitely a good deal.
i havent been to tj max and marshalls for years..i need to stop by over there one day.
Unfortch for me, this hasn’t won me over. I’m very into high quality basics, classics that never go out of style, and a few key pieces each season that are of the season. I don’t like to buy a lot of crap – a la Forever 21, Zara, etc. Instead of spending money on a lot of crap, I like to buy more high end, but fewer pieces. I can see how someone with fast-fashion taste might shop at TJ MAXX or Marshall’s, but even with the “splurge vs. steal” models it was pretty easy to see that the “steal” looks were a little bit off, not to mention that the “splurge” looks they were based on set the bar pretty low to start with – they were not desirable looks! I must say the Catharine Malandrino sequin dress was really cute, but still not a very wearable piece. The marketing team is good at reaching their target audience though – those interested in fast-fashion. But the trend is going away from that, towards “green” shopping, buying less and being more thoughtful, which I am glad to see, because it has always been my method.
HomeGoods( they call it MarshallsHomeGoods where I live) is the best for furniture and home decor…hands down. I’ve found things that were sitting up in Pier One and department stores the same season at Marshalls HomeGoods.
I’ll admit…I’m blown that you have never went to either store. but now you see what can find in there. People always underestimate these stores, thinking they are full of crap. This where I get all of fragrances, I’ve found high end skin care, beauty products like Kiehls and Korres, countless designer deals. Why not get a deal on something than pay the higher price. And its not always true that price=quality.
I went to tjmaxx once since it is kinda far from my home. I was always hesitant to walk into stores like that. I get tired of digging and avoiding the crazy crowds. My mom does love to go though. Thanks for giving us information, we probably won’t ever see.
Holy Fucking Christ Wendy! You are an angel from god for sitting through a powerpoint presentation at the TJ Maxx Corporate offices in Massachusetts. I Hope they paid you and sent like fifty seven male prostitutes to your hotel room each night. God bless you.
I have nothing against TJ Maxx or Marshalls, but this whole post is shill. It’s their payoff for the trip.
how much were the last two jackets?
i’m in love with them!
