I went to WashingtonDC earlier this year and followed some of Obama's cheaper eats. Here's some recs I really liked: Worth the trip in Arlington, VA is Ray's Hell burger (http://rayshellburger.com/ ) which is just outside of WashingtonDC. Ben's Chili Bowl near Dupont Circle if I remember correctly (http://www.benschilibowl.com/ordereze/default.aspx) Stop by Georgetown Cupcakes (http://www.georgetowncupcake.com/) – They have their own tv show and their cupcakes taste great. Top Chef Spike's We, The Pizza (http://www.wethepizza.com/) – their soda is Awesome & Good Stuff Eatery (http://www.goodstuffeatery.com/). Shake Shack if you like frozen custard or a custard shake (http://www.shakeshack.com/) because their burgers are small in comparison to the other places.

definitely stop at ben's chili bowl (which is on U st., not near dupont circle), pollo rico just outside of DC is extremely good, cake love (also on u st.) has great cupcakes, cactus cantina on wisconsin ave. has great mexican food…that's all i can remember off the top of my head. thaiphoon near dupont circle has great thai food i haven't been back to DC in a few years, but i'll always be home to me. oh, and five guys burgers and fries. don't know if that has made it up to new york, but it originated in the dc area.
Definitely Toki Underground for ramen, Cafe Manna for Korean tacos (they're actually burritos), Busboys and Poets in DC or Shirlington (right outside of DC), and Baked and Wired in Georgetown for the best cupcakes and other baked goods
